We design our pieces to last, and believe our responsibility extends well beyond the moment they leave the workshop. That is why we place repair before replacement. A French House

Fosfens is a French design house, deeply rooted in its local environment and committed to preserving the mastery of traditional craftsmanship. Our luminaires are designed, machined and assembled in France, in collaboration with partners and suppliers who share our commitment to precision, quality and respect for the craft. This close collaboration fosters a continuous dialogue between design and manufacturing. It allows us to follow each project with care, refine every detail and maintain a direct relationship with the people who bring our creations to life. Each luminaire bears the imprint of a carefully mastered process, rooted in a mechanical and artisanal tradition, yet always open to the possibilities of tomorrow.

A Case Worthy of a Work of Art

At Fosfens, the care devoted to an object does not end with its final finish. It extends to the way it is protected, transported and delivered to its recipient. Each luminaire is packed in a wooden crate designed to protect it, drawing on the principles used to transport works of art. This choice is first and foremost a matter of care: preserving the object and its finish until it reaches its destination. It also reflects our understanding of craftsmanship. A luminaire made with such care deserves the same attention when it leaves the workshop as when it takes shape within it. Its protective case accompanies its arrival in a new space, with the consideration due to an object intended to endure.

At Fosfens, we design luminaires at the meeting point of two disciplines: the rigour of precision engineering and the sensitivity of the eye. We select materials such as aluminium, brass, copper, stainless steel and titanium for their properties, their durability and the way they interact with light. Components are machined using computer-controlled equipment, including five-axis machining where the geometry calls for it, before being carefully fitted and finished by hand. It is at this final stage that the material fully reveals its character. Satin finishing, micro-bead blasting and polishing subtly transform reflections, texture and the presence of the object. These are not merely surface treatments, but an integral part of its identity. Our engineering expertise also draws on surface-treatment processes used in demanding industrial sectors, including aerospace. Each process is selected according to the material and its intended use, helping to ensure the durability of the components and the lasting quality of their finishes. We do not seek to produce more. We seek to design with purpose, manufacture with care and give every detail a reason to exist.

Maison Fosfens

Fosfens is a young house, but its story began long before its first luminaires. Its roots lie in a culture of craftsmanship, precision and work well done, passed down through generations. In 1970, Stevan Bijelić leaves his homeland at the age of seventeen and sets out for Paris. He arrives with very little, but with the determination to learn a craft and build a future with his own hands. Watchmaking, precision engineering and metalworking become the foundations of his journey. In the workshop, he learns to observe, understand materials and measure every movement. Precision cannot be improvised. It is built through experience, repetition and an unwavering attention to the smallest detail. He goes on to establish his own company, putting his expertise to work in sectors where reliability is essential: aerospace, medical technology and luxury. Different worlds, united by the same demands for accuracy, mastery and consistency. Stevan passes this culture of workmanship on to his son, Milan Bijelić.

For more than fifteen years, Milan contributes to the development of LED technology within major international groups. He discovers its possibilities, its limitations and the questions it leaves unanswered. Gradually, his perspective shifts. Beyond technical performance, he becomes increasingly interested in light itself: its presence, its nuances and its ability to transform our perception of objects and spaces. There is another sensibility running through his life, too: music, rhythm and composition, which have accompanied him since childhood. Between mechanics and music, the precision of a gesture and the freedom to create, the same pursuit begins to take shape: finding the right balance. Together with his wife, Elena, he decides to build Fosfens. Not simply as a lighting brand, but as a house in the fullest sense of the word: a place of creation, transmission and considered craftsmanship, shaped around their shared vision and their family story.

Fosfens emerges from the meeting of two worlds: the mastery of precision engineering and the exploration of light as a sensitive, expressive material. A house where every creation carries forward a body of knowledge while opening up space for exploration and the unexpected. The name evokes the phosphene: the perception of light that remains behind closed eyelids, even in the absence of an external light source. An inner glimmer, a trace that endures. This image captures something essential to our approach. We seek light that does more than illuminate, light that leaves an impression. A discreet presence, sometimes almost imperceptible, that transforms a space and allows an emotion to linger.

It was Juliette, the founder’s eldest daughter, who chose drawing as a way of telling this story from a different perspective. Through her line, she portrays the people who make Fosfens what it is, with the distinctive eye of someone who knows them intimately. These portraits express another form of transmission, one that is more personal and spontaneous. They tell the story of the bonds that unite us and remind us that behind every creation, every gesture and every idea, there are people.
